Unnam-dong parish in the Archdiocese of Gwangju, where I am staying, is full of beautiful roses in May and many people visit in order to take pictures and enjoy themselves. To maintain such a beautiful rose garden, we cannot allow other plants or weeds to grow around the roses. So that the roses are provided with the best nutrients we need to use herbicides to kill other plants and also the hard work of many people to keep things in check is required. In short, the beauty of the roses can be appreciated by people only at the expense of the other plants.
The same could be said of human beings. Humans have taken the lives of many other creatures in order to live lives of abundance. It could be said that the curse of COVID-19 is, in fact, a blessing to all other creatures. Through this experience of COVID-19, we begin to realize that the ways in which humans exploit other life forms will eventually lead to the destruction of human life itself.

God has gifted men and women with the ability to rule over all living things and to coexist with them. However, humans too easily rule and exploit other living things and use them simply for convenience and efficiency. Strangely, the way humans fight COVID-19 is not by adapting to nature, but through the use of disposable products and plastics, which in turn might threaten other forms of life and future generations.
Ironically, I see hope at a time when many people are suffering from COVID-19. Previously, I thought it was only a matter of time until the world would be destroyed through human greed. Now, I admire the resilience of God's creation, which has brought a stop to human activity through COVID-19 and given space for other creatures to flourish.

To escape COVID-19, for which we were totally unprepared, I hope that we can find a way to live in harmony with all of God's creation.
The Friday of Jesus' death on the cross was the saddest day for all creation, but it became the day of greatest hope. At a time when humans are living in fear of COVID-19 we hope that we might discover a way to live in harmony with all creation. If so COVID-19 may be an opportunity given by God.
My personal wish is that the rose garden of Unnam-dong parish will remain as it is. That was the original intention of the believers of the parish who planned and worked on the garden. They also sacrificed other plants for the sake of the roses. However, we must remember that God created the entire universe and said that, "It was good."
The rose garden of Unnam-dong church is beautiful in May; however, if you visit even outside of May, you can still taste Genovius Café Latte, which is unique to the Rose Cafe in our church. A welcome awaits all those who visit.
